How to preserve a radio memory

A practical invitation to record the ordinary details of listening, while keeping personal recollection distinct from independently verified history.

Start with an ordinary moment

You do not need a rare receiver or a famous broadcast to contribute. A familiar voice during breakfast, a sports programme heard with family, or a station that connected you with home can be worth recording.

Try writing down the approximate date and place, the people present and the device you remember. Describe what you personally experienced. If a detail is uncertain, say so rather than replacing it with a confident guess.

Separate memory from later research

It helps to distinguish “I remember hearing this” from “I later found this date in a programme guide”. Both can be useful, but they support different claims. A photograph, label or schedule can add context without erasing the personal character of the account.

Sending a contribution

Use Contact Us to send your account. Tell us your preferred public name and whether you allow publication. Only send photographs or recordings you are entitled to share; identify their creator and any conditions of use.

Contributions arrive privately. We will agree the text and attribution with you before displaying a visitor memory. At the opening of this exhibition, no visitor memories have been published. This guide is an invitation, not a fabricated recollection.
