When the world entered the living room

Thinking about radio as part of everyday life means looking beyond its circuitry to rooms, routines and the people who listened.

An object in a room

Europeana's exhibition on mass media places radio within a wider story of cultural experiences entering the home. A receiver was more than a diagram of components: it occupied a physical place and became part of daily routines.

That perspective suggests a useful way to look at an old photograph. Where is the receiver? Who is near it? What else is happening in the room? The image may raise questions about shared listening without proving how every household behaved.

Listen for the ordinary

News, entertainment and music can all be part of the remembered sound of a home. A timetable or programme listing adds another layer: somebody chose a time to tune in, and somebody else made a programme for that moment.

The Science Museum's work on vintage radios similarly asks what early listening actually felt like. Technical knowledge and personal experience can illuminate one another when their sources remain clear.

Make a small record today

Choose one programme you hear this week. Note where you listen, why you chose it and whether you listen alone. These simple details can help a future reader understand the place of broadcasting in everyday life.
