A radio in a pocket: looking at the Regency TR-1

The 1954 Regency TR-1 offers a way to explore the relationship between new components, portable design and everyday listening.

A particular surviving object

The Smithsonian's record identifies a red Regency TR-1 transistor radio dated 1954. The museum describes the use of four transistors and reception of AM stations. The Computer History Museum also documents the model and its commercial introduction.

Small components, new possibilities

The story connects component development with product design. A portable case, controls, battery arrangements and a speaker all matter to how a device is used. Calling something “portable” invites a practical question: portable for whom, and under what circumstances?

Rather than assume that every household changed at once, compare an object record with advertisements, photographs and personal accounts. A product's availability and an individual's experience are different kinds of evidence.

Your listening comparison

Think about the device you use to hear a station now. Can you carry it? Do other people hear the same programme? How do you choose a station, and what happens when the connection fails?

The comparison does not make the old receiver obsolete as a cultural object. It helps reveal how equipment can shape habits. Our online drawing suggests a portable receiver; the original TR-1 and its photographs remain with the institutions credited in the references.
